Fancy ticking off a marathon without training, timing chips or hitting the wall? Vilnius has a proposition. Lithuania's capital is staging what it calls Europe's slowest marathon on 12-13 December 2026 — a self-guided festive walking event where the only rule is to slow down.
The campaign, dreamed up by tourism agency Go Vilnius, needs no registration and is open to locals and visitors alike. Routes range from a gentle 3km to the full 42.195km, with 10km and 21km options in between, all weaving through the compact, walkable city and its lesser-known corners rather than the usual crowded festive hotspots.
Along the way there are built-in excuses to stop. Senatorių Pasažas (Senators' Passage), a historic courtyard, serves a popular cinnamon bun worth pausing for, while the Užupis Cat sculpture marks the bohemian district of the same name. Some streets have suitably seasonal names too — Žiemos (Winter), Šerkšno (Frost), Sniego (Snow) and Elnių (Deer). If you can't make the main weekend, digital route maps stay available until 3 January 2027.
The idea, says Go Vilnius communications head Eglė Girdzijauskaitė, is to flip the usual Christmas rush on its head: a compact city of short distances, UNESCO-listed Old Town lights, warm cafés in historic courtyards and the glow of the Cathedral Square tree, all best enjoyed unhurried.
The marathon slots neatly into a fuller festive programme. The season kicks off on 28 November with the annual Christmas tree lighting, followed by the Christmas Market in Cathedral Square (28 November to 27 December), an ice rink at Town Hall Square (29 November to 25 January) and a Christmas train looping the Old Town (28 November to 3 January).
For travellers, this is the 'race-cation' trend with the pressure removed — an active break that doubles as a festive city escape. It suits anyone who likes the idea of a challenge but prefers pastries to personal bests, and it pairs well with Vilnius's other winter drawcards. Expect cold, often snowy weather: pack layers, waterproof boots and an appetite.
