American Express cardholders in the U.S. can now book Airbnb properties directly through Amex Travel, in the deepest loyalty integration the home-sharing platform has ever done. A new Homes tab on AmexTravel.com and in the Amex Travel app surfaces more than a million Airbnb listings, and prepaid stays earn up to 5X Membership Rewards points.
The deal matters more than a typical points partnership. Airbnb has run airline tie-ups for roughly a decade — with Qantas, Delta and British Airways — but those mostly amount to a tracked link that sends you to Airbnb's own site to book. This one embeds Airbnb inventory inside the Amex Travel booking flow itself, a signal that Airbnb wants to be treated like any other lodging supplier rather than a standalone platform.
For premium cardholders, the perks go further. Amex's $600 annual lodging credit — previously branded as a hotel credit — can now be applied to Airbnb Luxe homes booked for two nights or more. On top of that, booking a Luxe property unlocks a new $250 annual credit toward Airbnb Experiences. That's a notable repositioning: Amex's high-end credits were long reserved for traditional luxury hotels, and now they work for private homes too.
Why should a traveller care? If you carry an Amex card, Airbnb bookings just became considerably more rewarding. Instead of earning nothing beyond the card's baseline, prepaid stays can pull in up to 5X points, and Platinum members can burn part of that $600 credit on a villa or designer loft instead of a hotel chain. Points collectors who previously booked Airbnbs outside the points ecosystem now have a reason to route those stays through Amex Travel.
There's a flip side worth noting. Booking through a portal usually means dealing with Amex rather than your host directly if something goes wrong, and portal inventory or cancellation terms can differ from booking natively on Airbnb. The upside for many will outweigh that — especially anyone sitting on an unused lodging credit who prefers homes over hotels.
For Airbnb, the deal marks its largest step yet toward behaving like an OTA supplier and chasing the premium traveller. For Amex, it plugs an obvious gap: members who wanted to earn and redeem meaningfully on home rentals previously had to look elsewhere. Expect this to raise the bar for how loyalty programs treat alternative accommodation.
The partnership launched Thursday and currently covers U.S. card members, so travellers elsewhere will need to wait and see whether the rollout expands. If you're planning a trip and hold an Amex card, it's worth checking whether your target listing appears in the Homes tab before booking directly — the points difference on a longer stay can add up fast.
