Fresh off the New York City Marathon buzz, a lot of runners start eyeing their next race — and the next one doesn't have to be in the next borough. Destination races have quietly become one of the best excuses to travel: you cover a new place on foot, meet the local running community, and end up seeing corners of a destination you'd never notice from a tour bus. A recent round-up of 15 spectacular international races shows just how far the bar has been raised.

The headliners are genuinely exotic. The Great Wall Marathon in China (May 15, 2027) sends runners along one of the world's great wonders — expect a punishing, hilly route and enthusiastic village crowds. Entry only comes via tour package, starting at $790 with two nights' accommodation. The Arctic Marathon Finland, out of Rovaniemi, starts exactly on the Arctic Circle line in Santa Claus Village square, and comes bundled into a five-day package with log cabins, private saunas, husky sledding and Northern Lights excursions.

Africa offers arguably the wildest option: The Big Five Marathon (June 19, 2027) runs through the Entabeni Game Reserve in South Africa, where the sandy trails come with a genuine chance of spotting lions and elephants mid-race. It's capped at 300 runners and requires a seven-day package from $3,560, including game drives and bush walks. Also under the Albatross banner: the Iceland Volcano Marathon (July 3, 2027), which traces the rim of two volcanic craters across black lava fields near geothermal hot spots, via a roughly $3,100 six-day tour.

If you'd rather keep things lighter and cheaper, there are plenty of accessible picks. The Midnight Sun Marathon in Tromsø, Norway starts at 8:30 p.m. — still broad daylight above the Arctic Circle — and drew 9,000 runners from 88 countries last year. California's Big Sur International Marathon (April 25, 2027) delivers a cliffside Highway 1 course and doubles as a Boston qualifier. London Landmarks Half loops past Big Ben, the Tower of London and the London Eye on a nearly flat route. Taiwan's Rock 'n' Roll Taitung brings live bands and DJs to a flat course between mountains and the Pacific, while Tossa de Mar on Spain's Costa Brava offers coastal trail and road races from €39. Napa to Sonoma caps its wine-country half with a post-race wine festival.

Who's this for? Anyone who'd rather earn their holiday views on foot. There's genuinely something at every level — flat 10Ks for casual runners, six-hour-limit courses for groups of mixed abilities, and serious adventure races for veterans. A few things to weigh before signing up: some races require pricey mandatory tour packages, time cut-offs can be tight (Tossa de Mar's half allows just 2 hours 35 minutes), and altitude or terrain — Yellowstone's rocky sections, Banff's 4,620-foot elevation — can catch you out. Popular events sell out fast: Banff's 2027 half marathon is already gone. Registration for most of the others is open now, so if any of these grab you, lock in a bib before booking flights.
