If your December holiday plans are still up in the air, Gqeberha (Port Elizabeth) might be the smart play. New analysis of flights and self-catering stays shows a family of four can do 14 nights on the Eastern Cape coast for around R24,600 total — flights included — which works out to roughly R439 per person per night. Strip out the flights and accommodation alone comes in at about R245 per person per night in a holiday home.
The flight leg is the interesting part. Return tickets for two adults and two children from OR Tambo to Port Elizabeth start at about R10,859 with a checked bag each, or R9,940 if you share luggage between just two passengers. Splitting bags saves real money: adding a checked bag costs around R230 per person each way, so travelling light on two of the four seats knocks roughly R920 off the family total. The cheapest departures from Johannesburg fall at the start of December (from R1,026 without a bag) and the very end of the month.
Timing your return matters even more. Flights peak between 23 and 27 December and stay pricey in early January, with peak-period returns for a family potentially hitting R14,900. But fly back after the school term starts — 14 January 2027 is flagged as the cheapest return date — and fares drop by around 27%, or up to 58% off peak on the Gqeberha route. If you can push your return past the first day of term, the savings are substantial.
Accommodation is the catch. Affordable self-catering options in Gqeberha are already filling up for December, so availability is limited. If you can't lock in one place for the full fortnight, splitting your stay across two properties is a workable workaround.
Why is Gqeberha so much cheaper than the obvious alternatives? Demand, essentially. It's roughly twice as far from Johannesburg as Durban, yet flights cost 22% less, because the Durban route is busier and airlines discount Gqeberha seats to fill planes. The comparison across destinations makes the point starkly: return flights for four cost about R10,850 to Gqeberha, R12,613 to East London, R13,924 to Durban, and a steep R20,246 to Cape Town.
For South African families who've left booking late, this is one of the few realistic ways to still get a proper two-week beach holiday under the R450-per-person-per-night mark. The formula is simple: fly at the edges of December, share checked luggage, book self-catering, and come home after schools restart.
