Carvoeiro, the whitewashed fishing village turned holiday favourite on Portugal's Algarve coast, throws one of the region's liveliest Halloween parties — and this year it's boarding the Halloween Express. On Saturday, October 31, the village runs a full afternoon-to-midnight programme of music, a street parade and costume fun, all loosely inspired by the world of Harry Potter.
Things kick off at 4pm in the main square, where DJ Likotta spins tunes to warm up the crowd. The centrepiece comes at 7.30pm, when the Halloween parade sets off from beside the Carvoeiro sports court (Polidesportivo de Carvoeiro) and snakes its way through the village streets. From 9pm, live music from Manuel João keeps the square buzzing until the celebrations wind up at midnight.
The event is backed by Lagoa Council and local groups including Carvofestas, and it's aimed squarely at everyone — families with kids in costumes, expat residents, and tourists who happen to be in town. Costumes are encouraged rather than required, but anyone who turns up unadorned will likely feel underdressed.
Part of what makes Carvoeiro a good Halloween pick is the setting. The village sits around a small bay framed by the golden limestone cliffs the Algarve is famous for, and by late October the summer crowds have thinned while the weather is often still mild enough for an evening outdoors. Square-based events like this one are free to attend, which makes it an easy add-on to an autumn break along the coast — Lagoa's wider municipality, with towns like Ferragudo and the estuaries around Alvor, is within easy reach if you want to stretch the trip.
Practically speaking, arrive with time to park or walk in: the parade route and square will be pedestrian-crowded by early evening, and Carvoeiro's streets are compact. Bring a layer — October nights by the Atlantic can turn cool once the sun drops — and note that dinner service in village restaurants will be busy around parade time, so book ahead or eat early.
For anyone planning an off-season Algarve escape, this is exactly the kind of local festival that makes shoulder-season travel worthwhile: small, free, genuinely local, and a lot more fun than a generic hotel party. If you're in the eastern or central Algarve on Halloween night, Carvoeiro's square is the place to be — wand optional.
