The hotel long known as the Courtyard by Marriott Isla Verde Beach Resort has quietly become something plusher. After a roughly $38 million renovation, the beachfront property now flies the flag of Marriott Hotels proper — the company's flagship brand — and reopened with a new identity as the Marriott Isla Verde Beach Resort in August.

So what did the money buy? Guest rooms got a full refresh, along with the lobby, social areas, dining venues and behind-the-scenes infrastructure. The resort also leaned on local Puerto Rican architects, designers, artists and contractors for the overhaul, so the new look isn't a generic corporate template. It marks the end of more than two decades under the Courtyard name — returning guests will find a substantially different property at the same familiar address.

The fundamentals were always strong. All 260 rooms have private balconies, and the resort sits directly on Isla Verde Beach, one of San Juan's liveliest stretches of sand. Guests can borrow complimentary Linus bikes to explore the neighbourhood, and there's an on-site Casino del Sol for after-dark entertainment.

The dining lineup covers most bases without forcing you to book out every meal: Meso handles Mediterranean dinners (plus breakfast) with oceanfront seating, Papaya Oceanfront Grill does American fare, Café Colao covers the coffee fix, and Destilado in the lobby pairs cocktails with small plates. Veranda by Meso and in-room dining round out the breakfast options.

The practical pitch here is convenience. Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport is minutes away, which means you can be on the beach shortly after landing — ideal for a shorter trip where you don't want to burn half a day on transfers. And it's a different flavour of San Juan stay from the boutique hotels in Old San Juan: there, the colonial streets set the tone; in Isla Verde, the beach and ocean do the talking.

For Marriott Bonvoy members, the property now counts as a proper beachfront option for both earning and redeeming points in Puerto Rico. Anyone who stayed here back in its Courtyard days and liked the location has a genuine reason to give it another look — the bones are the same, but the finish is a big step up.
