Istanbul Airport has claimed the top spot in OAG's 2026 Megahubs Index, ending London Heathrow's three-year run as the world's most connected airport. IST now links travellers to 337 destinations, a rise powered largely by Turkish Airlines, which OAG also rates as the best-connected airline on the planet.
The climb has been quick. Istanbul sat eighth in 2024, moved to second in 2025 and now leads the table. OAG builds the ranking from twelve months of schedule data across the 100 biggest international airports, counting every possible inbound-to-outbound connection within a six-hour window.
Heathrow slipped to second, with potential connections on its busiest day down six per cent year on year. One factor: ongoing disruption at Gulf hubs, tied to regional conflict, has pushed traffic toward Istanbul as travellers and airlines look for alternatives to the usual Middle East connecting points. Amsterdam Schiphol took third after growing both capacity and destinations, while Kuala Lumpur held fourth, edging its destination count from 151 to 154.
For Australian travellers the shift is practical, not just trivia. Istanbul's network makes Turkish Airlines a stronger one-stop option to Europe, the UK and Africa. And the Asian hubs matter too: Kuala Lumpur, Seoul Incheon (sixth) and Tokyo Haneda (eighth) all sit in the top ten, giving Australia-Europe flyers alternatives to the Gulf routing, while Frankfurt in seventh remains a key European gateway. In the US, the pecking order stayed put, with Chicago O'Hare leading Atlanta, Dallas Fort Worth, Denver and Charlotte.
