Kyrgyzstan's Muslim authority, the Spiritual Directorate of Muslims of Kyrgyzstan, has given a provisional date for the 2027 fasting month: Orozo, as Ramadan is known locally, is expected to begin on Sunday 8 February. The final call will come closer to the time, since Islamic months follow the lunar calendar and depend on moon sightings.

The date lines up with Kazakhstan's religious calendar for 2027, published by its own Muslim administration. That calendar also fixes Qadyr tun — the Night of Power, the holiest night of the month — on the night of 5-6 March, with Orozo Ait (Eid al-Fitr, the festival that ends the fast) falling on 9 March. Kurman Ait, or Eid al- sacrifice, is set for 16-18 May.

There's a decent track record behind the assumption: the start of Ramadan has fallen on the same day in Kyrgyzstan and Kazakhstan for the past seven years running — 24 April 2020, 13 April 2021, 2 April 2022, 23 March 2023, 11 March 2024, 1 March 2025 and 19 February 2026. Even so, Kazakhstan's authority has been careful to note that nothing is officially approved yet.

For travellers, this is the kind of quiet logistical detail worth noting early. Ramadan shifts about 11 days earlier each year, and 2027 will see it land in deep winter — 8 February means fasting hours are short, but daylight in mountainous Kyrgyzstan is limited too. During the fasting month, many restaurants and cafes in Bishkek and smaller towns keep reduced hours by day, while evenings turn lively with iftar meals. Trains, shared taxis and government offices generally run normally, but quieter daytime streets and earlier closing times can change the rhythm of a trip. The upside: Orozo Ait on 9 March brings festivals, feasting and a genuine window into Central Asian hospitality if you time it right.

If you were already mulling a spring 2027 trip to the Tian Shan or the Silk Road sites around Osh, it's worth pencilling these dates into the plan — either to embrace the festive atmosphere or, if you'd rather have full restaurant and café access, to arrive a couple of weeks after Orozo Ait. Keep in mind that both countries may still confirm slightly different start dates once the moon is actually sighted, so treat 8 February as a strong hint rather than a guarantee.
