The Algarve isn't all beaches and golf. From October 8 to 10, the town of Lagoa transforms itself into a self-styled "City of Magic" for the sixth edition of Lagoa Magic Fest — the region's only international illusionism festival.
This year's programme pulls together seven acts from Portugal, Spain and Cuba, with names including G Alexander, Raul Camagüey, Antonio Cardinal, Lanydrack & Faty, Los Taps and Ricardo Pimenta, alongside hometown magician Paulo Cabrita performing with Rosana. Cabrita, who runs the Lagoa Academy of Illusionism, is also the festival's artistic director.
The structure is refreshingly unpretentious. On the Thursday and Friday, magicians fan out across the municipality for street performances, visits to schools and stops at local institutions — so the magic happens in town squares and classrooms rather than behind a ticket booth. Every one of those street events is free to watch, which makes it an easy add-on if you happen to be in the eastern Algarve that week.
The festival wraps up on Saturday, October 10, with a closing gala at the Auditório Carlos do Carmo from 9pm, where all the invited performers share one stage. Tickets are €10, with discounts for holders of Lagoa's Cultural Passport, and you can buy them at the municipality's usual outlets, including the auditorium itself and the Centro Cultural Convento de São José.
Why bother planning a trip around it? Lagoa sits between Portimão and the coast at Carvoeiro, an area that's wonderfully quiet in October once the summer crowds thin out. Warm sea, lower prices and a small-town cultural festival that costs almost nothing — it's a tidy autumn escape. If you're already in the Algarve, the free street shows alone are worth an afternoon, and the gala gives you a proper night out for the price of a round of drinks.
