Awards season has been good to the Maldives. In the space of a few weeks, several island resorts picked up nods from two of the biggest industry programmes — the Family Traveller Awards and the World Travel Awards — and for holidaymakers, the results read like a curated shortlist.
The most family-focused news came from Kuda Villingili, named Highly Commended for Best Long-Haul Family Stay at the Family Traveller Awards 2026. The UK publication's awards drew hundreds of entries across 19 categories, judged by a panel of family travel journalists and then decided by public votes, with results announced in London on 11 September 2026.
Kuda Villingili's pitch is multigenerational travel done properly. It sits just 30 minutes by speedboat from Velana International Airport — a rare convenience in a country where many resorts involve a seaplane hop — and offers 75 private-pool villas and residences, several with multi-bedroom layouts. The clever bit is the design: bedrooms and living areas have separate external entrances plus internal connecting doors, so grandparents, parents and older kids can share a villa without tripping over each other. There's a kids club with its own beach on a shallow lagoon, a 150-metre pool with shallow zones, beginner surf lessons at the Baby Chickens break, and enough tennis, padel, diving and watersports to keep teenagers off their phones. Children under 12 eat free across the resort's eight restaurants.
Over at the World Travel Awards, the OZEN Collection had a strong night. OZEN RESERVE BOLIFUSHI took 'Maldives' Leading Luxury Hotel Villa' for the fourth year running, thanks in part to its 3,000-square-metre Royal RESERVE — private beach, personal spa therapists, 24-hour butler and chef included. Sister resort OZEN LIFE MAADHOO was named 'Indian Ocean's Leading Villa Resort' for a second time, on the strength of its all-in INDULGENCE plan covering seven restaurants and M6m, an underwater restaurant in South Malé Atoll.
Baros Maldives also picked up 'Indian Ocean's Leading Water Villa Resort 2026'. Its case rests on geography: the house reef sits so close to the overwater villas that guests can be snorkelling among coral within minutes of stepping off their private deck. Water Pool Villas, at 126 square metres, add a private pool above the lagoon.
Rounding things out, Finolhu earned five nominations at the Luxury Childcare Association Awards 2026, spanning baby and toddler care, teen programming, and sustainable childcare — a sign that Maldivian resorts are competing hard for the family market across every age group.
Why it matters: if you've written off the Maldives as a couples-only honeymook, this season's honours suggest otherwise. The newest wave of resorts is explicitly built around family logistics — short transfers, connecting rooms, supervised childcare and free kids' dining — while classics like Baros still deliver the classic overwater-reef fantasy. Whether you're booking a three-generation trip or a barefoot snorkelling escape, there's now an award-flagged option for both.
