The Mondrian brand, better known for design-led city hotels from Los Angeles to London, has landed in Mexico's Hotel Zone. The new Mondrian Cancun is open and taking bookings, marking the lifestyle label's first big push into the all-inclusive game on the Mexican Caribbean.
The 400-room resort occupies a prime stretch of Kukulcan Boulevard, sandwiched between the Caribbean Sea on one side and Nichupté Lagoon on the other — water views in both directions. Cancun's airport is only about 15 minutes away, which makes an easy arrival after a long flight.
Rooms start at a generous 559 square feet, noticeably larger than the entry-level standard at most Cancun resorts. The lineup runs from Signature Bay rooms facing the lagoon to coastal rooms looking out to sea, then climbs through a 764-square-foot Loft Suite, a 1,065-square-foot Corner Suite and a sprawling 1,625-square-foot XL Corner Suite. There's also Mondrian+, an upgraded tier that unlocks access to a rooftop pool with panoramic views — a social, cabana-and-music scene that sets the property apart from the usual all-inclusive formula.
On the food and drink front, there are 10 restaurants and bars, plus three pools, a beach club and a programme of cultural and creative experiences. Rates — all including the all-inclusive package — started at $322 per night for two people in a Signature Bay King, $357 for a coastal-facing room and $392 for Mondrian+. Suites run higher: $511 for the Loft Suite and $637 for the XL Corner Suite, before taxes.
The opening is part of a bigger play by Accor and Ennismore, whose sibling brand SLS recently launched the 498-room SLS Playa Mujeres just north of Cancun. The strategy is clear: take urban lifestyle brands built on nightlife and design and rework them as full-scale Caribbean all-inclusives. It also lands in a landmark year for Cancun hotel openings, with a new St. Regis in Costa Mujeres, a coming Grand Hyatt and several other upscale debuts crowding the market.
For travellers, that competition is good news. If you've found Cancun all-inclusives a bit interchangeable, Mondrian offers something with more personality — a resort that feels like a city hotel dropped onto the beach, at prices that undercut many comparable luxury properties in the zone.
