South Africa logged 835,380 overnight tourist arrivals in September 2026, and the breakdown from Statistics South Africa (Stats SA) shows just how regional the country's tourism really is. Neighbouring Mozambique led the way with 182,751 visitors, followed closely by Zimbabwe at 178,966 — together accounting for over 360,000 arrivals between them.
Lesotho took third place with 127,152 tourists, and it's the one to watch: arrivals from the mountain kingdom jumped 21.9% year on year, up from 104,339 the previous September. Eswatini (74,261) and Botswana (38,672) rounded out the top five. Put the top three African source markets together and they made up 74.1% of all SADC visitors that month.
Overseas numbers tell a different story. The United States was South Africa's biggest long-haul market with 27,825 tourists, ahead of the UK (22,305) and Germany (17,627). Australia, the Netherlands, France, Brazil, Canada, India and Switzerland also featured, but overseas arrivals totalled just 161,753 — under a fifth of the total. Brazil was the only overseas market posting a notable rise, up 9.1% to 6,035 tourists.
The bigger picture: SADC countries supplied 659,613 of September's tourists, roughly 79% of all arrivals, with the rest of Africa contributing just 1.6%. And the trips were overwhelmingly for fun — 97.5% of visitors came for holidays, which Stats SA counts broadly to include vacations, visiting friends and relatives, shopping and personal trips like weddings. Business travel was a mere 2.1%, study 0.3% and medical travel under 0.1%.
One caveat worth knowing: these border figures count movements, not people. Cross the border twice in a month and you're counted twice — a reminder that frequent regional travellers inflate the numbers somewhat.
For travellers, the takeaways are useful. Southern Africa's borders are busy and well-worn routes, so expect lively crossings and plenty of regional company at popular spots — particularly in places like Kruger National Park, Cape Town and the KwaZulu-Natal coast, which draw heavily from neighbouring countries. If you'd rather share viewpoints with fewer people, travelling outside the September Tourism Month peak can help. And with Lesotho sending record numbers south, its own appeal as a destination — highland drives, pony trekking, the Sani Pass route — is only growing as a add-on to a South Africa trip.
