One of Tulum's most photographed luxury hotels has a past you won't find in the brochure photos: Casa Malca was built in the 1980s as a vacation mansion for Pablo Escobar, complete with bulletproof walls and escape tunnels. The Colombian drug lord used it as a retreat until his death in 1993, after which the property sat abandoned for roughly a decade.

The turnaround came when Colombian art collector Lio Malca bought the derelict estate in 2012. He reopened it as a boutique hotel in 2015 with just nine rooms, and it has since grown into a 71-room property that's become one of the most recognisable names on Tulum's beach strip.

Art is the real draw here. Malca filled the hotel with pieces from his personal collection: giant lightbulb sculptures by Sunil Gawde (the Blind Bulbs project) near the beach bar, pop art by Fabien Verschaere including a 2007 work called Batman, and a 1988 Keith Haring Pop Shop piece that gives the Haring Bar its name. Works by KAWS and Kenny Scharf round out the collection, so even guests with no interest in the building's history get a gallery stay out of it.

The Escobar chapters haven't been erased, though — they've been repurposed. The bulletproof walls remain part of the structure, and the old escape tunnels now form a woven passageway called the Tunnel to Paradise that runs straight down to the beach. A mood-lit underground grotto pool, added after the renovation, is the property's showstopper feature. Some guests claim the place is haunted; the hotel leans into the story rather than shying away from it.

Beyond the art and the lore, Casa Malca delivers standard luxury-hotel kit: three swimming pools, a rooftop spa, well-regarded restaurants, and a private stretch of beachfront. Its location at the quieter end of Tulum puts it next to the Sian Ka'an Biosphere Reserve, a UNESCO-listed wetland where you can float ancient Maya canals and spot wildlife.

So is it for you? If the idea of sleeping in a former narco mansion feels tacky, plenty of Tulum alternatives exist. But if you like design hotels with a story, contemporary art in unexpected places, and a beachfront pool carved into a grotto, Casa Malca is one of the more memorable options in the Riviera Maya. Rooms can be booked through Booking.com, Expedia, Hotels.com, or directly with the hotel — expect Tulum luxury pricing, which rarely comes cheap, especially in high season.
