MSC Cruises is getting a second private island. The company has broken ground on Sandy Cay, a secluded Bahamian island reserved exclusively for MSC Cruises and its luxury sister line Explora Journeys, with doors (and beach umbrellas) opening in 2028.
The ceremony drew Bahamian Prime Minister Philip Davis and MSC's executive chairman Pierfrancesco Vago, and construction is already moving. Sandy Cay sits right next to MSC's existing Ocean Cay MSC Marine Reserve, but it's pitched as a different beast: smaller, quieter and built around wellness. Think pristine beaches, curated dining, private retreats and a deliberate emphasis on slowing down to the ocean's rhythms rather than packing the day with activities.
That doesn't mean Ocean Cay stands still. From late 2027, guests there will find an adults-only beach, a family lagoon and more rentable cabanas, with further additions planned: extra dining venues, new beach concepts split by crowd type, expanded relaxation zones and immersive experiences tied to the island's marine conservation work. For context, Ocean Cay currently runs eight beaches, seven bars, a casual food court, food trucks and the usual Caribbean island menu of snorkelling, watersports and a lighthouse climb.
There's a ship angle too. MSC World Asia has completed sea trials ahead of its December 2026 Mediterranean debut, and it will carry a new family entertainment venue called The Clubhouse — part LEGO zone, part bumper cars, basketball and roller skating — plus a refreshed two-deck Luna Park that shifts from kids' activities by day to DJ sets and themed parties at night.
Why does this matter if you're not booking a cruise this week? Because MSC is betting big on owned destinations, and that shapes what a Bahamian itinerary looks like for the next decade. With two islands serving two different vibes — Ocean Cay's active marine reserve energy and Sandy Cay's hushed wellness focus — passengers on either line get two distinct stops in the same country. If you've been eyeing Explora Journeys as MSC's upscale answer to luxury sailing, Sandy Cay gives it a shore-side perk that the mass-market lines can't copy. Early-adopter types should watch for 2027-28 itineraries that call at both islands in one sailing.
