Newark Liberty isn't the airport most New Yorkers brag about, but for United flyers it's home turf — the airline runs roughly 70% of flights there — and its lounge game has quietly become one of the best in the country. Nearly every United lounge at EWR has been refreshed or rebuilt in the past four years, and each has a distinct personality worth knowing before you swipe in.

The flagship for most travellers is the United Club near Gate C123 in Terminal C, which kicked off the overhaul in May 2022. It's a big one — 30,000 square feet, 480 seats — and it leans hard on local character: murals by Newark artists developed with the Newark Museum of Art and Gallery Aferro, subway-style tiles, and food cooked by chefs stationed at the buffet, including entrees served in cast-iron skillets. There's a full coffee bar, premium bar, wellness room and shower suites, plus recessed work booths and Manhattan skyline views.

The United Club near Gate C74 opened in October 2023 and is the more utilitarian sibling: 18,000 square feet and 400-plus seats in a circular layout inspired by midtown Manhattan, with ceiling art nodding to Grand Central. It can feel cramped, but the window counter seats look straight down at the gates — handy if yours is below — and the snack bar gummy bears and fresh cookie swaps at breakfast-to-lunch changeover have their fans.

Over in Terminal A, which won Skytrax's World's Best New Terminal award after opening in January 2023, the United Club near Gate A27 is the smallest at 15,000 square feet but arguably the nicest vibe. It's an open-air, loft-like space above the terminal with about 300 seats, a buffet, bar, wellness room and locally sourced art, including a mixed media mural by Newark artist Antoinnette Ellis-Williams. In summer, expect little touches like heart-cut Jersey peaches in the infused water.

If you're flying long-haul in Polaris business class, or in first or business on a Star Alliance international flight, the United Polaris Lounge in Terminal C is the real prize. It debuted in 2018, got a major expansion in June 2025 that pushed it to 30,000 square feet — now the largest in the entire Polaris network — and swallowed the space of the former Classified speakeasy, which unlocked wider skyline views. The draw is the full-service restaurant, included with entry: lump crab cake, fish tacos, seared scallops, the signature Polaris burger, and the warm chocolate chip cookie skillet with vanilla ice cream that regulars treat as non-negotiable. Reservations for dining are made in person with the host at busy times, though waits tend to run 15 to 30 minutes rather than the quoted time. Beyond dining there are private phone booths, showers, nap rooms and a dedicated United service desk.

Practically speaking: every lounge runs 5 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily, except the C123 club which stays open until 10:30 p.m. If you hold a United Club membership or eligible cabin ticket, aim for C123 for design and workspace, A27 for calm, and Polaris whenever your itinerary lets you in.
