Travel insurance company SafetyWing has launched Nomad Citizen, an annual membership that bundles health coverage, travel protection, income protection, life insurance benefits, and even parental leave into a single plan. The target audience is specific: location-independent entrepreneurs and business owners who spend more than half the year outside their passport country. There are no residency restrictions on where you're covered — it works worldwide, including the US, though the coverage limits there aren't built for heavy use of the American health system.

Who can join? People under 56 earning at least $4,000 USD per month. You sign up online, pick your start date, declare you're in good health, and confirm you'll be abroad more than half the year. Partners and children under 18 can be added to the plan.

Pricing, for sign-ups from July 1, 2026, runs $443 per month for ages 18-39, $665 for 40-49, and $875 for 50-55. Kids cost $143 per month, though a couple can add their first child under 10 free.

The standout feature is income protection — something freelancers and sole traders have historically been shut out of, since conventional disability insurance demands a fixed employer and permanent address. If you lose your income through layoffs, dried-up contracts, or illness, Nomad Citizen pays up to $4,000 per month for three to six months. Long-term disability pays $4,000 monthly up to age 75 in cases like cancer diagnosis, stroke, or loss of mobility. New parents get $4,000 per month of parental leave support, though there's a three-year waiting period before that benefit unlocks.

The health side goes well beyond emergency-only travel insurance: up to $1.5 million a year covering inpatient and outpatient care, prescriptions, dental, vision, mental health, maternity, and preventive care. Travel coverage handles trip delays and cancellations, stolen electronics, lost luggage, evacuation, and family visits during hospitalisation.

There are extras that make the package feel more like an employment benefits scheme than an insurance policy. Members get visa assistance — SafetyWing handles communication with governments and quality-checks applications for nomad visas through its app. A Nomad Care Map lists over 4,000 rated healthcare providers worldwide, with notes on English proficiency. A prepaid SafetyWing card lets members pay providers directly for covered services up to $500, auto-filing the claim so there's no waiting for reimbursement. Claims, coverage, and 24/7 human chat all live in one app.

So who actually needs this? If you're based in a country with strong public services, probably not you. But the review makes a compelling case for the nomad living in Bali, Thailand, Mexico, or anywhere they have zero access to a local safety net. The examples are real enough: a friend in Mexico hit by a car, hospitalised, exhausting his travel insurance limits, then unable to work for months and forced to start a GoFundMe. That's precisely the gap Nomad Citizen is built to fill.

For full-time digital nomads running their own businesses — especially those with families — this is one of the first serious attempts to recreate the corporate benefits package for people who don't have a corporation behind them. Worth pricing out against your current patchwork of policies.
