After a week of snow, Calgary looks set to catch a break for Halloween. Environment Canada's latest forecast, issued Wednesday, Oct. 28, calls for flurries to linger into Thursday morning before conditions improve, then a sunny high of 8°C on Saturday, Oct. 31. Not exactly warm, but a lot friendlier than the white stuff that fell earlier in the week.

The lead-up is the chilly part. Friday, Halloween Eve, is forecast sunny but cold with a high of just 1°C, and temperatures dip to around -1°C overnight on Saturday. So while daytime plans look pleasant enough, anyone heading out for evening trick-or-treating should layer up — costumes with room for a coat underneath are the smart play this year.

There's more good news if the early winter got to you: Monday, Nov. 2 is expected to be sunny with a high of 13°C, a genuine taste of autumn returning after the sudden cold snap.

If you're planning a night out rather than (or alongside) the candy run, Calgary has a solid lineup of Halloween events on Saturday, Oct. 31. Screamfest takes over GMC Stadium (2200 Stampede Trl. SE) from 7 p.m. to midnight, with general admission from $35.40, a Killer Cash Combo from $44.94, and a SpeedPass from $55.43. Heritage Park hosts Where Dark Things Dwell, with game sessions at 8 and 10:30 p.m. for $54.95 plus GST.

Cheaper options abound, too. Frights and Delights at The Confluence (750 9th Ave. SE) kicks off at 6 p.m. and costs nothing to attend. The Fright Crawl runs 7:30 p.m. to 2 a.m., with the location shifting through the night and tickets from $29.30. For something earlier in the day, The Crypt and The Crow at TOPS Pizza (9919 Fairmount Dr. SE) runs until Oct. 31 from 10:30 a.m. to midnight, and reservations are free.

One caveat: forecasts can shift, and Calgary weather has a habit of keeping people guessing. But as of Wednesday's outlook, a sunny Halloween genuinely looks on the cards — a nice treat after the week the city just had.

For travellers, this is a decent snapshot of what late October in Alberta can be: snow one week, double-digit sunshine the next. If you're visiting around Halloween, pack for both — waterproof layers and warm evening gear — and know that plenty of the city's seasonal events are either free or under $40, so an impromptu trip won't break the bank.
