A castle hotel on an Austrian lake is about to get seriously festive. Rosewood Schloss Fuschl, set on the shore of Lake Fuschl in the Salzkammergut region, kicks off its holiday season on 26 November, when the property switches over to full winter-wonderland mode — and this year's programme is one of its biggest yet.

The centrepiece for many visitors will be the resort's winter market, back with its largest line-up of vendors to date. Expect a properly local mix rather than generic Christmas-fair stock: wild herbs and alpine ingredients from Almsinn, Italian wines and Mediterranean snacks from Di Vine, handmade soy candles from ONRUS, and letterpress stationery from Salzburg's Letterpress Manufaktur. It's a good pick-up spot for gifts you actually want to take home.

Food is clearly where the hotel is putting a lot of effort. The season opens on 26 November at 6pm with a Thanksgiving dinner with an Austrian accent — canapés and butternut squash soup, then roasted Waldviertler duck with stuffing, sweet potatoes, Brussels sprouts and lingonberries, finishing with pumpkin pie and vanilla ice cream. Christmas Eve brings a multicourse dinner beside the lake, with chef's specials and vegetarian options including rigatoni with chervil and black truffle, prawn tartare, and Atterox beef filet.

Beyond the table, there's a packed calendar of seasonal activities aimed at families and couples alike: a Krampus parade (Austria's delightfully alarming horned figure), a Santa visit, carol singing, a torchlit walk in the landscape around Hintersee, live music from local musicians, Advent boat rides on Lake Fuschl, gingerbread-house and cookie-decorating workshops, holiday bedtime stories and film marathons. You could easily fill a long weekend without leaving the property — though Salzburg is close enough for a day trip.

Why it matters: if you've been toying with a European Christmas-market trip but want to skip the crowded city-centre scrum, this is the lakeside-luxury version. One base covers market browsing, festive dinners, outdoor winter walks and plenty to keep children busy, with Salzburg's own famous markets and airport under an hour away. Book the fixed-price dinners ahead — they're date-specific, and the Thanksgiving and Christmas Eve sittings will be the first to fill.
