On Isla Holbox, the low-key island off Mexico's northern Yucatán where the Caribbean meets the Gulf, the streets are sand, the transport is bicycles and golf carts, and the big-ticket spectacle swims offshore: whale sharks gather in these waters every warm season. Among the island's growing crop of small hotels, one stands out for personality as much as location — Ser Casasandra, a beachfront property with just 18 rooms and suites plus a private villa.
The hotel is the work of Cuban-born artist and writer Sandra Pérez Lozano, whose own pieces hang alongside handmade Mexican and Cuban furnishings throughout. The result is rustic but considered — original art, individual furniture, nothing cookie-cutter. One deliberate quirk: no televisions, telephones, radios or alarm clocks in any room. If you want the best of it, the Master Luxury Beach Front rooms sit on the upper floor of the main building, with sea views and a private balcony kitted out with a handmade hammock.
The island itself rewards slow travel. You can cycle into town past murals and beach bars, eat lunch with sandy feet, and be back on the hotel's stretch of white sand by mid-afternoon. The headline excursion is the whale sharks — huge filter feeders that congregate off the northern Yucatán roughly from May to September, though sightings always depend on the animals and the conditions. Book your dates accordingly; a winter trip here is a different, quieter beach holiday.
Back at the hotel, there's a wellness programme at the AHAL Holistic Center — couples' massages, seafront yoga and Pilates — plus boat trips, wildlife watching and private beach dinners cooked by Chef Andrés, who also tailors menus to dietary needs. With a property this small, everything is a few steps from your room, which is exactly the point.
Ser Casasandra has also leaned into weddings and honeymoons. A full buyout sleeps around 45 adults, and events can host up to 100 guests. Typical celebrations unfold over several days — a poolside welcome with Mexican antojitos, a beach day with tacos and live music, a ceremony by the sea, and brunch the next morning. Weddings require a three-night minimum (four in peak periods), and groups of 25 or more must take the whole property. Couples who marry there get a complimentary first night in the Master Suite and a couples' massage; honeymoons can be booked on their own too.
You don't need a wedding as an excuse. This is a hotel for couples and small groups who want a week alternating between a boat outing, a massage, a hammock and a dinner on the sand — with whale sharks as the optional bonus if the season lines up.
