Abu Dhabi's weekend lineup for September 18 to 20 is unusually strong, and most of it costs very little. Here's what's happening and who each one suits.
Start with the biggest freebie: until September 29, a free Abu Dhabi International Book Fair pass gets you into three heavyweight museums — Louvre Abu Dhabi, the Zayed National Museum and the Natural History Museum — at no charge. The book fair itself runs until September 18, so register for the pass quickly and you can string together a proper culture weekend for the price of nothing.
If Batman is more your speed than galleries, Kinokuniya at Galleria Mall is hosting Batman Day on September 19. Free comics from 10am, board game demos at noon, a comic drawing session at 4pm, and a trivia tournament at 6pm focused strictly on the comics rather than the films. Registration opens at 3.30pm and spaces are limited, so arrive early and revise.
Quiz fans have two options. Lock, Stock & Barrel runs its Risky Quizness night every Friday at 8pm with free entry, physical challenge rounds and up to Dhs3,000 in prizes — book a table ahead, and happy-hour drink prices run until 8pm. Alternatively, DNA Board Games Cafe stages Harry Potter trivia on September 19 at 8pm, covering only the first two books. Tickets are Dhs60 including a drink.
For food, Lucky 2000 in Mina Abu Dhabi is doing something odd and appealing: a late-night breakfast pop-up called Breakfast at Osama's, from 7pm to 10pm across all three nights. Brown butter maple doughnuts with Earl Grey soft serve, Dhs50 for two. And if your weekend starts with a proper morning, Peet's Coffee has launched an unlimited breakfast for Dhs69 (Dhs49 for kids under 10), daily from 8am to 1pm at six branches including Al Qana, Dalma Mall and Al Ain Tower, running until September 30.
Need a break from all of it? Jubail Mangrove Park on Jubail Island is open 7am to 9pm, with a boardwalk winding through the mangroves for Dhs15 per adult. Go early, before the heat builds.
Why it matters: this is a good template for a cheap city break in the UAE capital. Free museum access, free entry quizzes with real prize money and sub-Dhs100 meals mean a full weekend can come in well under budget — useful whether you're a resident or flying in for a short stay. Just note the tight dates: the museum deal needs a pass registered by September 18, and the Batman and trivia events are one-day only.
