Southwest Airlines is quietly redrawing its international map. Between November 2026 and June 2027, the Dallas-based carrier will launch 11 new routes beyond the US border — and the surprise is where they're coming from. None depart from Houston, Orlando or Baltimore, the airline's three busiest international gateways. Instead, Austin and Nashville get eight of them, four apiece.

Austin Bergstrom, where Southwest already handles more than 40% of all operations, picks up San Jose, Costa Rica in March 2027, followed by Liberia in Costa Rica, Punta Cana in the Dominican Republic, and Nassau in the Bahamas from June. Nashville follows a similar playbook: Liberia kicks things off in February 2027, Aruba arrives in March, and Nassau plus Providenciales in Turks and Caicos land in June. On every single one of these routes, Southwest will be the only airline flying nonstop — a genuine rarity for Caribbean and Central America service from mid-sized US cities.

Three more routes round out the expansion from other cities. Las Vegas gains a year-round link to Puerto Vallarta starting November 2026, becoming the Mexican resort's seventh year-round Southwest destination. Punta Cana gets nonstop service from both Columbus (March 2027) and Pittsburgh (June 2027).

For travellers, the appeal is straightforward: one-stop-free beach holidays from cities that historically had to connect through bigger hubs. If you're in Tennessee, a nonstop to Aruba or Turks and Caicos changes the calculus for a winter sun trip entirely. Same for Austinites eyeing Costa Rica's Pacific and Caribbean coasts without a connection in Dallas or Houston.

It's also worth watching what kind of airline you'll be flying. Southwest has spent the past couple of years shedding its old budget-carrier habits — assigned seating, basic economy fares, and a forthcoming airport lounge network are all in the mix. The airline operates the world's largest Boeing 737 fleet, so expect the same aircraft type across all these routes.

The timing matters too. Nashville services start rolling out from February 2027, so anyone planning a spring break or early-summer Caribbean escape from Music City should keep an eye on when tickets open. Austin's San Jose route lands in March, perfectly timed for Costa Rica's drier months.
