United Airlines is quietly bulking up its San Francisco hub, adding five new or restored domestic routes from SFO starting late March 2027. Announced via the airports themselves rather than any big airline fanfare, the batch covers Charleston, Hartford, Oklahoma City, Richmond and Norfolk — four of them transcontinental hops to smaller East Coast or south-east markets.

Three of the routes kick in on 28 March 2027. Charleston, South Carolina gets seasonal service four days a week (Mondays, Thursdays, Fridays and Sundays) on a Boeing 737-800 or MAX 8. Hartford, Connecticut gets a full daily, year-round commitment on a 737 MAX 9 — notably a route United dropped back in 2018 and is now reviving. Oklahoma City also returns after lapsing in April 2020, with daily flights operated by SkyWest on an Embraer E175.

The two Virginia additions are the curious ones. Richmond launches 28 March with just Thursday and Sunday flights, while Norfolk starts 31 March with Wednesday and Saturday service, year-round. Twice-weekly frequencies are unusual for a legacy carrier at its own hub — that's normally low-cost, leisure-airline territory. The practical upshot: Richmond travellers get a neat long-weekend pattern, but anyone needing to fly on other days is back to connecting itineraries.

There's a competitive edge too. Breeze Airways already flies nonstop between Richmond and San Francisco, and the timing and thin schedule suggest United's new route is at least partly a response. Whether both carriers can sustain the route long-term is an open question, but for now travellers get a rare choice of nonstops.

Why does this matter if you're not based in Virginia or Connecticut? Because every one of these routes also works in reverse. If you're in San Francisco, the Bay Area or anywhere United feeds into SFO, you're getting nonstop access to some genuinely appealing destinations: Charleston's historic streets and food scene, Hartford as a gateway to New England, or Norfolk and Richmond for Virginia's colonial history and coastline. All five also open one-stop options beyond United's West Coast hub for travellers from those smaller cities.

Bookings for March 2027 routes typically open well in advance, so it's worth watching United's site if any of these pairings fits a spring trip. Just note the fine print on frequencies — the Virginia flights only run on specific days, so plan around them.
