Travellers in the Baltimore–Washington corridor now have a fresh way to reach the Caribbean without a connection. JetBlue began flying nonstop between Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport and San Juan's Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport on November 2, timed nicely for anyone plotting a warm-weather escape over the winter months.
The route is part of a wider Puerto Rico push the airline announced back in May, which also covered a new Fort Lauderdale–Ponce service and extra flights to Aguadilla. JetBlue only entered the Baltimore market in July with flights to Fort Lauderdale, so San Juan represents a quick deepening of its footprint there — and a second Caribbean option from a region where travellers have long had to shop around for nonstops.
Why it matters: San Juan is one of the easiest Caribbean city breaks going. You land in a US territory, so no passport is needed for American citizens, and the city packs beaches, history and a serious dining scene into one place. Old San Juan's blue cobblestone streets and colonial forts sit about 40 minutes from some genuinely good sand.
Where you stay shapes the trip. Old San Juan suits anyone who wants to wake up inside the historic district — El Convento is the reference point there, built around a courtyard and steps from the old city's shops and landmarks. Condado is the oceanfront-city pick, with waterfront hotels, restaurants and the Condado Vanderbilt as the standout luxury option, complete with a historic main building, oceanfront pools and destination dining. Isla Verde skews beach-first: the Fairmont El San Juan Hotel has a wide stretch of sand, four pools and a lobby bar with a reputation of its own, and it sits close to the airport for an easy arrival day.
For anyone booking winter dates out of BWI, the new route is simply another fare to compare — and for Baltimore-based travellers who previously routed through Miami or New York, it removes a leg entirely. Nonstop to a city where you can pair a beach day with a rooftop cocktail and a proper dinner reservation is a solid trade for a few hours in the air.
Who's it for? East Coast travellers after a low-hassle winter sun break, couples wanting a city-plus-beach combo, and anyone who fancies exploring beyond the capital — the same JetBlue expansion makes Ponce and Aguadilla easier to reach for a second stop on the island.
