There is no fixed price for a United Polaris business class award — MileagePlus prices everything dynamically, so the answer to 'how many miles?' is a range, not a number. United's own examples span 80,000 miles at the bottom to 200,000 at the top for the same cabin.

The clearest published figures came on February 19, 2026, when United detailed new cardholder benefits. Polaris Saver Awards price 'as low as' 80,000 miles. Eligible primary cardholders get at least 10% off award tickets, taking that example to 72,000 miles, while cardholders who also hold Premier status get at least 15%, dropping it to 68,000. Those discounts only apply to tickets bought on or after April 2, 2026, only on United and United Express metal (not partner awards), and not to Money + Miles bookings. They're percentage-based, so they're worth more in absolute terms on a 200,000-mile redemption than a cheap one.

The bigger change, though, was access rather than price. United opened Polaris Saver inventory previously reserved for Platinum and 1K members to anyone holding a United credit or debit card. Thrifty Traveler spotted cross-country Polaris redemptions at 80,000 miles for general members against just 30,000 with a card — a gap no percentage discount explains. United says roughly a third of flights with Saver availability include this cardholder-exclusive inventory, so a card changes what you can see when Saver space exists, but it can't create space where there is none.

Miles aren't the only way into Polaris. Premier Platinum and 1K members hold PlusPoints, which currently price a long-haul economy-to-Polaris upgrade at 40 points on eligible fares (80 on deeply discounted ones), or 30 from Premium Plus. But that fixed chart is heading for dynamic pricing for travel from February 1, 2027, so the current numbers have a shelf life. Ordinary members can use MileagePlus Upgrade Awards instead — miles plus a cash co-pay, with published examples like 20,000 miles plus $412 one-way from Salt Lake City to Brussels. Upgrades waitlisted rather than confirmed cost nothing if they don't clear; instant confirmation exists but can run 110 PlusPoints, effectively a 1K-only option.

For travellers, the takeaways are practical: hold a United card before searching, target Saver inventory on flexible dates, and remember published figures are illustrations, not guaranteed rates. If you're eyeing a PlusPoints upgrade, book travel before the dynamic switch in February 2027.
