Downtown Edmonton is about to get a whole lot more festive. Winterval, the city's annual winter street festival, takes over 104th Street on Saturday, November 21 from 4 to 8 p.m., and it won't cost you a cent to join in.

The action happens on 104th Street between Jasper Avenue and 102nd Avenue — the same stretch that now houses the 104th Street Entertainment District. That designation matters: for this one evening, visitors can legally wander the festival grounds with an alcoholic drink in hand, which pairs nicely with the après-ski zone where live DJs will be spinning all night.

The lineup reads like a greatest-hits of Canadian winter nostalgia. There's street hockey on the actual street, free maple taffy, photos with Santa, and a cappella sets from local group ETown Extended. Add street performers, holiday photo ops, warm-up stations for when the cold bites, and a winter patio stretching across the street, and you've got a solid four hours of seasonal cheer. Nearby shops are planning their own activations too, though details on those are still to come.

On the decks for the après-ski party are Kena Leon, Lugz, Post Meridian, and Syd — enough variety to keep the dancing going between rounds of hot chocolate or whatever you're carrying from the Entertainment District.

Getting there is straightforward. Bay/Enterprise Square Station on the Capital Line connects directly underground to 104th Street, while the 102nd Street Valley Line stop is a couple of blocks away. Buses work too — the #5, #900X, #8 and #2 routes all stop on Jasper Avenue between 105th and 104th. If you'd rather drive, the Downtown Edmonton Business Association lists nearby parking options with rates you can check online beforehand.

For travellers, this is a nice excuse to see a Canadian downtown in full winter mode without spending much. The festival is free, the treats are free, and Edmonton in late November tends to be properly snowy — so you get the full postcard experience. Dress in serious layers, bring gloves you can eat taffy in, and consider pairing the evening with the city's other November happenings to make a weekend of it. Just note the date carefully: the business association has listed it as November 21, 2026, so if you're reading this before then, you've got time to plan.
