Central Việt Nam is shaping up as a strong pick for a year-end trip, with Đà Nẵng and Hội An stacking up weeks of festivals, performances and heritage events running from mid-November 2026 into early 2027.
The headline act is the Hội An International Lantern Festival, themed Hội An – Colours of Heritage, running December 3 to 6. It spreads across Hoài River Square, the An Hội Sculpture Garden, the riverside and streets throughout the ancient town. Expect large-scale lantern art installations, hands-on lantern-making sessions, the Lanterns and the Art of Rebirth exhibition, plus evening events under the banner Minh Đăng Dạ Hành – travelling by night with a bright lantern, which suits a town best seen after dark. Lanterns started here as a traditional craft and have become the symbol of Hội An, so this is the source material, not a gimmick.
There's more around it. From November 20 to December 5, Hội An marks Việt Nam Cultural Heritage Day with a seminar on the town's history as a trading port, exhibitions of heritage photographs and Hán-Nôm inscriptions, and the inauguration of a restored Hội An Prison project.
Beyond the old town, the UNESCO-listed Mỹ Sơn Sanctuary hosts Echoes of Mỹ Sơn performances on November 15 and December 12 at 9am and 2.45pm at tower groups B and C, with Chăm folk dances and the Ciet group dance. On November 16, Trà Linh Commune holds a Mountain God worship ceremony for the Xơ Đăng ethnic community, complete with gongs and folk dances, and a Cultural Week of Great National Unity runs November 18 to 24 across community venues.
Đà Nẵng itself isn't sitting still. A Christmas market at Ariyana Đà Nẵng (December 4 to 6) brings together more than 80 stalls selling handicrafts, gifts, decorations and food. New Year festivities run December 30 to January 3 along Bạch Đằng pedestrian street and both banks of Dragon Bridge, with countdown events on December 31 at East Sea Park, Tam Thanh Square and Tây Giang Square, and a Đà Nẵng Concert at the Đà Nẵng Museum on January 1, 2027. Hội An, Tam Kỳ and other nearby towns join in too.
Why it matters: the tourism promotion centre is deliberately tying these events to flight and weather information and service deals, which means travellers who book around festival dates should find it easy to bundle a cultural trip with practical planning. If lantern-lit riverside evenings, Chăm ruins and a Christmas market sound like your kind of December, this stretch of the central coast covers all three within an hour's drive. Bonus: Hội An's full-moon lantern nights continue monthly regardless of the festival, so the vibe lasts beyond these dates.
