Gamers will soon be able to sleep inside the Overworld. Merlin Entertainments and Mojang Studios have unveiled plans for the world's first official Minecraft hotel, opening in 2027 at Chessington World of Adventures in south-west London. It completes a bigger picture: the two companies announced Minecraft World earlier in 2026, a $66 million theme park dedicated to the bestselling video game, due to open at Chessington sometime in 2027.
The hotel will span four floors with 69 themed bedrooms in total — 49 standard rooms and 20 premium ones. Designers are drawing on the game's blocky visual language throughout: rooms and corridors reference its biomes, mobs, colours and textures. Arriving guests can expect blocky trees and animals bringing the Overworld to life at check-in, lifts styled as Nether Portals, and mine tunnel-style corridors running through the building.
Food and drink get the treatment too. There's an immersive restaurant on site, plus a potion bar inspired by the game's woodland mansion setting. According to Daisy Mercedes, Creative Producer at Merlin Entertainments, every room and detail has been built around love for the game and its community — with the pitch being that fans can quite literally sleep inside the world they usually play in. Over at Mojang, Creative Lead Filip Keatley Thoms has said the team has obsessed over everything from the scale of the blocks to how the game's creatures translate into physical space.
The hotel sits alongside the wider Minecraft World park, which will feature the world's first Minecraft rollercoaster, Escape the Nether, a block-building play area aimed at younger children, themed dining and shops. Exact opening dates for both park and hotel haven't been announced yet, only that both should welcome guests during 2027. A waitlist is open for anyone wanting updates.
For travellers, this is a genuinely novel addition to the UK theme park scene — not a generic branded hotel, but the first of its kind anywhere. It makes sense for families with Minecraft-obsessed kids, and for adult fans it's a legitimate weekend-away excuse: Chessington is only about 35 minutes by direct train from London Waterloo, so you can pair it with time in the capital. If you do go to the park, booking tickets online is the smarter move — you'll skip the queues and can save up to 50% on gate prices. Watch the waitlist if you want first crack at those 69 rooms when dates drop.
