Aman has quietly added another name to its Caribbean map, and this time it's Puerto Rico. The ultra-luxury group will open Amantaru, a resort plus a limited run of branded residences, inside Esencia — a new private community taking shape on the island's southwest coast at Cabo Rojo.

The name comes from Sanskrit for "peaceful tree", which tells you most of what you need to know about the vibe. It'll be Aman's fourth Caribbean destination, and the architecture has some pedigree: Marwan Al-Sayed of Masastudio, who also worked on the famous desert resort Amangiri in Utah, is designing both the hotel and the homes. Expect a contemporary take inspired by Puerto Rico's old coastal forts — thick, grounded forms, locally sourced natural materials, big open spaces and sightlines deliberately framed to catch the sea and those southwest-coast sunsets.

Facilities will follow the Aman playbook: a spa and wellness centre, a beach club, racquet courts and several restaurants. But the bigger draw may be the surrounding Esencia development, which is stacking in two championship golf courses, a private beach, equestrian and field clubs, boating, and miles of trails. Developers are Three Rules Capital working with Reuben Brothers.

Getting there is being made suitably frictionless for the brand's clientele: a private airport near the property with a 6,700-foot runway and private hangars, positioned for easy arrivals from North America. For those who want to stay permanently, the branded residences are fully serviced, three to eight bedrooms each, and come with full access to the resort's amenities — essentially a turnkey Aman lifestyle home.

Aman's CEO Vlad Doronin framed the project as a response to demand for more exclusivity in the Caribbean, and the group isn't slowing down: Amanvari in Los Cabos recently opened, with Aman Miami Beach, Aman Beverly Hills and Amancaya in the Bahamas still ahead.

Why should a traveller care? If Aman stays on your wishlist but the Caribbean price tag usually doesn't, Puerto Rico could change the maths. Unlike most of the region's luxury enclaves, the island is a US territory — no passport needed for American visitors, direct flights from the mainland, and the option to explore beyond a resort gate. Cabo Rojo itself remains one of the island's wildest corners: salt flats, limestone cliffs and the famous Los Morrillos lighthouse. No opening date has been announced yet, so treat this as one to watch rather than book. But if it lands anywhere near the standard set by Amangiri, the southwest coast is about to become a very different proposition.
