A pageant museum is an unusual tourism draw, but San Juan has made it work. The Miss Universe Experience, a free temporary exhibition at Plaza Las Américas, pulled in 27,700 visits in its first 23 days, according to figures the Puerto Rico Tourism Company released on November 5.
The show opened October 13 in the mall's former Sears space and runs through November 23 — one day before the 75th Miss Universe final, which Puerto Rico hosts on November 24 at the Coliseo de Puerto José Miguel Agrelot. That timing turns a November trip to San Juan into something with a deadline: see 18 crowns from across the competition's history before the next one is handed out.
The Puerto Rican Fashion History Council curated the collection, which pairs the crowns with photographs, memorabilia and fashion pieces tracing seven and a half decades of the competition. The emotional core for locals is a dedicated section honouring the island's five winners: Marisol Malaret, Deborah Carthy-Deu, Dayanara Torres, Denise Quiñones and Zuleyka Rivera. For visitors, it's a chance to examine objects usually glimpsed only on a TV screen.
The Tourism Company, which is backing the project alongside the Miss Universe Organization, Plaza Las Américas and Miss Universe Puerto Rico, framed the turnout as proof of appetite for entertainment tourism. Executive director Willianette Robles Cancel said the response showed genuine public interest in the pageant's history.
Practical details are simple: entry is free, and the exhibition is open Tuesday to Sunday, 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., on the second level of Plaza Las Américas. Being indoors, it slots neatly between beach mornings and evenings in Old San Juan. Getting there also just got easier — JetBlue launched a new Baltimore–San Juan nonstop on November 2.
If you're making a trip of it, recent hotel options include two new Hilton properties near the Puerto Rico Convention Center and the boutique Palacio Provincial in Old San Juan. Even if you can't score a seat at the final, the exhibition offers a way to be part of the anniversary celebrations before the crowns are packed away.
