Ecuadorian operator Galaxy Cruises has quietly grown its Galápagos operation with two new vessels — and both are small on purpose. The Galaxy Stella is a 12-guest luxury expedition yacht, while the Galaxy Skape is a 16-guest day boat for travellers based on land. The thinking comes down to park rules: shore groups in the Galápagos are capped at 16 people per naturalist guide, so on boats this size, everyone goes ashore together and nobody hangs around waiting for their slot.

The Galaxy Stella is a Broward yacht built in the United States, arranged over six cabins. There's a master suite with its own study and hot tub, plus a barbecue area and fire pit out on deck. Itineraries run to a four-day southern route, a five-day eastern route and an eight-day western route, with the southern and eastern options combinable into a longer eight-day voyage. Families and private groups can also take the whole yacht on charter — a rare setup in a destination where most cabins sell individually.

The Galaxy Skape is a different animal: an Italian-built Ferretti 731 and the fastest boat in the Galaxy fleet. It runs day trips from land, hitting one island per outing among North Seymour, South Plaza and Bartolomé. That makes it a flexible add-on for travellers who'd rather sleep in a hotel than on a boat but still want to tick off the classic wildlife islands.

On the multiday cruises, ships reposition between islands overnight. The payoff is practical: guests wake up already at the next landing site, arrive early while temperatures are still comfortable, and catch the wildlife at its most active — before the midday crowds show up.

Getting there is straightforward. Domestic flights of roughly two hours connect both Quito and Guayaquil with the Galápagos gateways of Baltra and San Cristóbal, where the Galaxy team picks guests up on arrival.

For anyone weighing up a Galápagos trip, the operator's pitch matters less than the underlying logic: in a park with strict group limits, boat size directly shapes your experience. A 12- or 16-guest yacht means flexible schedules, quicker landings and more time in the water. Travellers who want the full immersive version should look at the Stella's eight-day western route; those mixing island hotels with day trips get a new fast option in the Skape. The company also frames its growth around local hiring and Ecuador's tourism economy, which increasingly factors into how visitors choose Galápagos operators.
