American Express has added Etihad Airways to its Amex Offers program for the first time, with a targeted deal that knocks $200 off a flight purchase. If you hold an Amex card and have Abu Dhabi trips on the horizon, it's worth checking your accounts before you book.

The mechanics are simple: spend $1,000 or more with Etihad and you'll receive a $200 statement credit. You need to enrol your card and complete the purchase by December 31, 2026 — but travel dates after that deadline are fine, so there's no pressure to fly soon.

A few conditions matter. The ticket must be booked directly through Etihad's website or app and charged in US dollars, with the flight originating in the United States. Phone bookings, airport ticket office purchases, and onboard sales don't count. That said, the offer's author notes that similar Amex Offers have previously triggered on flights that didn't technically originate in the US, so enforcement may be looser than the terms imply — just don't count on it.

There may also be a points-based version of the deal floating around: 20,000 bonus Membership Rewards points instead of the $200 credit. At a typical valuation of around 1.7 cents per Amex point, that would be worth roughly $340, making it the better option if you're offered a choice.

The real play here is the Platinum Card. The Amex Platinum earns 5x points on airfare booked directly with airlines, which adds an incremental return of around 8.5% on top of the credit. Run the numbers on a $1,000 Etihad ticket: $200 back in statement credit plus 5,000 points, worth about $285 combined — a 28.5% effective return on the spend. The card also includes travel protections that come in handy when flights go sideways.

Because Amex Offers are targeted, not everyone will see this. Log into your Amex accounts and check each card you hold; if the offer appears on more than one, enrol the Platinum first. Deals like this occasionally resurface or appear in different forms, so it's worth a periodic scroll through your offers tab before any big airline purchase.

For anyone flying Etihad's US routes — New York, Chicago, Washington and other gateways through to Abu Dhabi and beyond — this is an easy discount on a booking you'd be making anyway. Just remember the offer is tied to the card, not the passenger, so whoever pays needs to enrol first.
