Austin keeps on growing as a Delta stronghold. The airline has filed plans for a nonstop route from Austin Bergstrom International (AUS) to Northwest Arkansas National Airport (XNA), serving Bentonville and the surrounding region, with the first flights scheduled for March 2027.

The timing is deliberate: service starts March 7 with a late-evening departure just before 9 p.m., and the return leg from Arkansas runs the next morning. Flights will use an Embraer 175 regional jet flown by SkyWest under the Delta Connection banner. For anyone making the trip, XNA is the closest airport to the University of Arkansas, and it puts Oklahoma, Missouri and Kansas within a reasonable drive too.

The corporate logic is hard to miss. Bentonville is home to Walmart's headquarters, and Delta has made no secret of its ambition to become Austin's carrier of choice for business travellers. Austin is Delta's fastest-growing "focus city" — a market it serves heavily without formally designating as a hub. By March the airline expects up to 70 daily departures from AUS, a huge jump from the 28 it ran at peak in 2019. The growth spurt includes the city's first nonstop link to Europe (Paris, starting in April), plus new routes to San Jose, Bozeman and Cancun.

Austin itself is getting crowded in the best way. Southwest still leads the market there and is planning its biggest AUS schedule ever for 2027, complete with one of its first-ever airport lounges. Delta is countering with a second, larger Sky Club in the works.

The new route also fits a wider story at XNA, which will operate 28% more flights this year than it did two years ago, according to Cirium data. Delta already connects Bentonville to five of its hubs — Atlanta, Detroit, Minneapolis, Salt Lake City and LaGuardia — so Austin becomes a sixth point of access.

Why does this matter to travellers? If you're in Austin and need to reach northwest Arkansas — whether for Walmart-related business, University of Arkansas visits or Ozark getaways — you'll soon skip a long drive or a messy connection. And more broadly, Austin is quietly turning into a genuinely useful connecting point on Delta's network, giving flyers in Texas another way to route across the country. Book early on the regional routes if you want the best fares; small jets mean limited seats, especially on business-heavy corridors like this one.
