Stuck for a date idea that isn't dinner and a movie? Calgary's autumn calendar is stacked with options, from courtroom drama you get to judge yourself to candle-making workshops and a murder mystery over cocktails. Here's what's on.
If you like your evenings with a plot, Evil Dead: The Musical runs at the Martha Cohen Theatre (215 8th Ave. SE) until Nov. 14, 2026, with 7:30 p.m. shows from $57 — expect laughs, gore and singing Deadites. Prefer to do the judging yourself? The Jury Experience at The GRAND drops you into a fictional trial on Nov. 20, Dec. 4 and Jan. 9, with 6 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. sessions from $54. And on Wednesday nights, the Prohibition Lounge (720 17th Ave. SW) runs Detective Date Night from 5 p.m. to 1 a.m. — you get a case file of evidence and cocktails for just $10 a head, making it the cheapest entry on this list.
The Calgary Central Library goes full escape-room on Nov. 20 with the Locked Library, a two-hour puzzle race from 7:30 p.m. at $30 per person.
Feel like making something? Milk Jar Candle Company (1450 28th St. NE) runs candle-pouring workshops across November — Nov. 7, 14, 15, 25, 28 and 29 — at $125 per person, where you blend your own fragrance and pour the wax yourself. Over at ol.facto's Signature Scent Lab (323 10th Ave. SW), guided sessions on Nov. 8, 18 and 27, from 1 to 4 p.m., let you build a perfume around seasonal notes like firewood, pumpkin and dried grass for $84. Mosaic Art Studio in Willowglen offers Turkish mosaic lamp-making daily (noon to 9 p.m. weekdays, 10 a.m. weekends) for $79, with zero art experience needed. If food is more your thing, Lina's Italian Market Hall runs hands-on classes in fresh pasta and pizza from $103.95 per person on select November dates.
For music, Candlelight Concerts pop up across the city through November with tributes to Fleetwood Mac, Queen, the Beatles and Coldplay, on dates including Nov. 6, 13-14, 20 and 27-29, with tickets from about $32.
And if the goal is pure unwinding: Thermae Eleven is the city's only outdoor hydrotherapy spa, open daily 9 a.m. to 11 p.m. (adults only). A 105-minute social circuit — rotating between hot and cold pools, saunas and lounges — costs $92 per person, or splash out on a private circuit for two at $249.
The nice thing about this lineup is the range of budgets: a detective night for two costs about the same as a single spa pass, so you can mix a splurge with a cheap weeknight. Several events — the Locked Library, the musical, the candle workshops — are one-off or limited dates, so booking ahead matters more than usual. Pair one of these with dinner on 17th Avenue or in Inglewood and you've got a full evening without falling back on the usual routine.
