An 18-night crossing is one of the longest trips Carnival is selling this year, and the Carnival Luminosa is currently in the middle of it. The ship left San Francisco on 20 September 2026, hugged the Alaskan coast, then pointed west across the Pacific for a run of Japanese ports before finishing in Tokyo.
The first stretch was classic Inside Passage: calls at Ketchikan and Icy Strait Point plus slow scenic cruising past Hubbard Glacier. From there came eight straight days at sea — a proper ocean crossing — before the ship reached Japan. The Japanese lineup covers Otaru on Hokkaido, Aomori in the north of Honshu, Shimizu within day-trip distance of Mount Fuji, and Kobe near Osaka.
What makes this sailing interesting is that it's leg one of a three-part repositioning that ends in Australia. After Tokyo, the Luminosa picks up a 14-night cruise through Japan, South Korea, Hong Kong and Vietnam, wrapping up in Singapore in late October. Following a drydock stop, the ship sails again from Singapore in late November, calling at Australian ports on the way to Brisbane, where it arrives mid-December.
Once homeported in Brisbane, the Luminosa settles into a much more accessible pattern: three- to 14-night cruises to Queensland and the South Pacific islands through April 2027. Then it does it all in reverse — back to San Francisco for a second Alaskan summer.
The transpacific sailing also closes the book on the ship's first San Francisco season, which ran from May 2026. Based on the West Coast, the 2009-built vessel mixed quick four-night getaways to Baja California with ten-night Alaska and Canada itineraries hitting Juneau, Skagway, Ketchikan and Prince Rupert.
Why should a traveller care? Repositioning cruises like this are among the best value-per-day deals at sea: long, destination-rich itineraries priced well below what the same nights would cost on a conventional route. If you've got the time and don't mind sea days, an 18-night trip that bundles Alaska's glaciers with four Japanese cities is hard to replicate any other way. And if two-plus weeks at sea sounds like too much, the payoff for other cruisers is the Luminosa's upcoming Australia-based season — short, warm-weather sailings from Brisbane to Queensland and the South Pacific from December through April.
Anyone eyeing the 2027 San Francisco return can expect a similar mix of Baja quick trips and longer Alaska-Canada sailings, with the convenience of a California homeport.
