A small Rogue Valley city with big food credentials, Central Point sits about 35 miles north of the California border and roughly 160 miles south of Eugene. Home to under 20,000 people and framed by the Cascades and Siskiyous, it punches well above its size when it comes to things to eat, drink and do.
The headline act is Rogue Creamery, an organic creamery turning out 12 to 15 cheese varieties with a special talent for blue. Its Rogue River Blue took the top prize at the 2019 World Cheese Awards in Italy, thanks in part to an unusual ageing process: nine to 11 months wrapped in grape leaves soaked in pear-flavoured spirits. The cheese shop is open daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and you can order a grilled cheese lunch on site. Come April, the town hosts the Oregon Cheese Festival, complete with a four-course Cheesemaker's Dinner.
Wine is the natural follow-up. Central Point sits inside the Rogue Valley AVA, and the options here suit every mood. Ryan Rose pours rotating tasting flights Thursday to Sunday in a downtown room next to the creamery, with charcuterie boxes built from local producers. Hummingbird Estate samples wines daily from noon to 7 p.m. on a 47-acre property built around a 1926 estate. Rellik Winery is the relaxed family pick — dogs and kids welcome, a pizza and panini menu, an on-site alpaca and llama farm, and even a bed and breakfast with a pool and firepit.
If you're travelling with children, the town earns its keep. The Crater Rock Museum packs 12,000 square feet with gems, minerals and fossils, and on the second Saturday of each month kids under 17 get in free for scavenger hunts and rock collecting. The Rogue Valley Family Fun Center charges no entry fee — you pay per activity for go-karts, bumper boats, mini golf and arcades. Don Jones Memorial Park adds a playground, walking paths and a seasonal water park open Memorial Day to Labor Day.
Two bonus stops make the trip easy. Historic Jacksonville, often called one of America's coolest towns, is about a mile from Rellik Winery and well worth an afternoon. Medford's international airport is under 3 miles away, so logistics are painless.
Why it matters: Central Point works as a road-trip stop along I-5, a weekend base for Southern Oregon wine country, or an easy family break with a genuinely world-class cheese shop at its centre. Few towns this size combine an international award-winning creamery, a dozen tasting rooms and a rock museum with free kids' days.
