Two people had to be cut free from a crushed car after it ran into the back of a semi-truck on a stretch of highway outside the small community of Santa Amalia, in the municipality of José María Morelos in Quintana Roo. The collision happened around 8:00 p.m. on a Friday night, and both occupants of the car were taken to hospital in serious condition.
According to initial reports from emergency services, both vehicles had been travelling north toward Tulum when the car slammed into the rear of the semi and ended up wedged partly underneath it, pinning both front-seat passengers inside. Passing motorists who witnessed the collision flagged down police, and local firefighters were called in to extract the trapped pair. The full extent of their injuries has not been confirmed.
The response involved a wide mix of agencies — local fire crews, paramedics from Cruz Ámbar, volunteers from the National Emergency Commission, and National Guard Highways officers. Police have not said what may have caused the crash.
For travellers, the location matters. This is the single highway corridor that links Cancún's airport and hotel zone with Playa del Carmen, Tulum and the rest of the Riviera Maya — a road huge numbers of visitors drive or ride along, often at night after landing on a late flight. Stretches south of Playa del Carmen pass through quieter rural country where heavy freight traffic mixes with tourist vehicles, lighting is limited, and emergency help can take time to arrive.
A few habits go a long way on this road. Keep a generous distance from trucks and buses, especially after dark — rear-end collisions with slow-moving or stopping freight vehicles are a recurring pattern in the region. If you are renting a car, avoid driving the corridor late at night on arrival day if you can, and check that your rental includes proper insurance coverage. Shuttle and ADO bus services remain a solid alternative if you would rather skip the drive altogether.
Nobody plans for an accident on holiday, but knowing what the road between Cancún and Tulum actually involves — heavy trucks, uneven lighting, long gaps between towns — helps you make smarter choices about when and how to travel it.
