Europe is about to get a direct line to Belize. Discover Airlines, the Lufthansa Group's leisure carrier, will launch a twice-weekly seasonal route between Frankfurt and Belize City starting 16 December 2027. Flights run Thursdays and Sundays through mid-April 2028 — a schedule that lines up neatly with Belize's dry season, the country's peak travel window.
It's a first: Discover will become the first European airline to serve Belize. Until now, European travellers have generally routed through US hubs to reach the country, so a nonstop from a major Lufthansa hub simplifies the trip considerably — one booking, one long-haul flight, and connections from across Europe folded into the same itinerary.
The dates to remember are already fixed. Tickets go on sale in mid-December 2026, giving travellers about a year's lead time before the inaugural winter season. Tourism Minister Anthony Mahler has framed the route as part of a push to diversify Belize's visitor base beyond its dominant North American markets, with Germany and neighbouring countries the initial targets.
So what awaits those passengers? Belize packs an unusual amount into a small country. The Barrier Reef sits offshore, with islands like Ambergris Caye offering diving and snorkelling trips, a laid-back San Pedro food scene and golf carts as the main form of transport. Head inland and the Cayo District switches to jungle rivers, waterfalls and Maya archaeological sites — enough variety to justify splitting a trip between coast and interior rather than parking on one beach.
The route also matters for how Belize positions itself. The country has been steadily adding airlift from the US and Canada; Frankfurt gives it a second continent. For European travellers eyeing a winter sun escape that goes beyond the standard Caribbean beach week, a direct flight opens up a destination where reef, rainforest and ruins sit within a few hours of each other.
Expect the first season's seats to be snapped up by German divers and returning snowbirds, so planning well ahead of the mid-December 2026 sale date is sensible if you want specific weeks in peak season.
