Belize is about to get a whole lot closer for Europeans. From December 2027, Lufthansa Group leisure carrier Discover Airlines will run the country's first-ever direct flights from Europe, linking Frankfurt with Belize City twice a week during the winter season.
The Belize Tourism Board confirmed the deal at a signing ceremony in Germany on October 20, with the inaugural flight set for December 16, 2027. The service will operate on Thursdays and Sundays from December through April — a schedule that lines up neatly with Belize's dry season and the peak European winter-sun escape window.
Tourism Minister Anthony Mahler, who led the delegation alongside Tourism Director Evan Tillett, framed the route as part of a wider push to reduce Belize's reliance on North American visitors. In practice, that means German travellers — and Europeans who can connect through Frankfurt's huge hub — will be able to reach the country's barrier reef, cayes, jungle lodges and Maya sites without a US or Mexican layover.
The news has gone down well in San Pedro on Ambergris Caye, the country's busiest island destination, where hoteliers and domestic airlines are expecting a busier 2027–2028 high season. Expect package deals and connecting hopper flights to the cayes to be built around the new arrivals.
Discover Airlines is a relatively young carrier — it launched in summer 2021 and flies leisure routes from Frankfurt and Munich — but its Lufthansa backing gives the route credibility and, crucially, easy one-stop connections from across Europe. For anyone in Germany, Austria, Switzerland or beyond who has always fancied Belize but balked at the long, multi-stop journey, this changes the maths entirely.
There's plenty of lead time before the first plane lands, but it also means savvy travellers can plan ahead. The December-to-April window is prime time in Belize: dry, sunny and perfect for diving the Barrier Reef, snorkelling with whale sharks in season, or pairing a few days on the cayes with inland stops at Xunantunich or the jungle around San Ignacio. Book early once seats go on sale — first-season fares on new long-haul leisure routes can be surprisingly sharp, and the good dates tend to vanish fast.
Why it matters: this is the first time Europeans get a nonstop option to Belize, opening up the country to a whole new wave of winter-sun travellers.
