Forget patting your pockets for a nol card before heading to the Dubai Metro. From October 2026, Dubai's Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has rolled out the first stage of a plan that will eventually let commuters ditch the physical card entirely.
Phase one is live now: QR code ticketing. Travellers can buy a ticket through the nol Pay app or the S'hail app and it lands on their phone as a scannable code. It works across the Dubai Metro, the Dubai Tram and the bus network, and there's no paper involved — you simply scan the code at the blue gates and walk through.
The announcement came from Mattar Al Tayer, Director General and Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors at the RTA, back in July 2026, with the QR rollout following this month. There's more to come, too. The upgrade programme runs in three phases: next up is a new generation of nol cards with smarter technology that links directly to customers' accounts for easier management. The final phase is the big one for visitors — paying for public transport straight from your bank card or digital wallet, no separate card or app purchase needed at all.
The RTA also plans to let passengers create personal accounts, link several nol cards — including family members' — and manage all balances from one platform. Automatic top-ups are on the roadmap too, so the days of frantically reloading a card with a near-zero balance at a metro station machine should be numbered.
Why should holidaymakers care? Dubai's public transport is genuinely good for a city with its reputation — the Metro runs the length of Sheikh Zayed Road past the Burj Khalifa and Dubai Mall, the Tram serves the Marina and JBR, and buses fill in the gaps. Until now, every visitor needed to get their hands on a physical nol card on arrival. The QR option means you can set up your ticket on your phone before you've even left the airport, and the eventual bank-card tap-in will make getting around as frictionless as it is in cities like London or Singapore.
If you're travelling to Dubai in the coming months, it's worth downloading the nol Pay or S'hail app ahead of your trip so you're ready to buy a QR ticket from day one. Physical nol cards still work fine, and the later phases will roll out with announcements from the RTA — so check what's available when you arrive. For anyone who has ever queued at a ticket machine with luggage in tow, this is a small change that removes a real travel hassle.
