Want to see Christmas without leaving your heated car? From November 19 to January 2, RAD Torque Raceway in Edmonton hosts Magic of Lights, a 2.7-kilometre drive-through display strung with more than two million LED bulbs. You never get out — you just cruise through light tunnels and themed scenes at your own pace, tunes on, mittens optional.
The route packs in a long list of set pieces: Twas The Night Before Christmas, Santa's Mountain, Winter Wonderland, Toyland, Reindeer Road and the 12 Days of Christmas, plus a few oddballs like a back-flipping Santa, a BIGFOOT monster truck and what's billed as Alberta's longest light tunnel. Hours run 5 to 9 p.m. Sunday through Thursday, extending to 10 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays.
Tickets are bought per vehicle, not per person, which makes this one of the cheaper big-name light shows around if you fill the car. The standard Car Flex Pass costs $27.20 plus fees ahead of opening night (rising to $34 on Nov 19) and is valid any day of the season for up to eight people. If queuing in idle traffic isn't your idea of festive cheer, the Car Dash Pass at $43.20 early pricing ($54 later) gets you into a fast lane. Groups in limos or buses pay $85 or $140 for the same skip-the-line perk, and diehards can grab a Season Pass for $110.25 and drive through as often as they like all winter.
There's a small weekday sweet spot too: gate purchases knock $5 off admission Monday to Friday, handy if you decide to go on a whim.
Why bother? Because this is the rare holiday event where cold weather works in your favour — you control the thermostat, there's no walking between displays, and kids (or grandparents) who wouldn't last 20 minutes outdoors will happily sit through a 45-minute light crawl. It also scales to almost any group size, from date night to a full minivan or a staff party bus. Just book online before Nov 19 if you can; the early-bird discount is a solid 20 per cent. Wrap up warm anyway if you plan to roll the windows down for photos, and consider a Sunday-to-Thursday visit to dodge the weekend crush.
