If your idea of a Caribbean escape includes an evening at the movies, Santo Domingo has something unexpected in store this autumn. EUROCINE 2026, a festival of contemporary European cinema organised by the European Union Delegation in the Dominican Republic alongside EU member states, Caribbean Cinemas, the national film commission DGCINE and production company Ebribari Audiovisual, opens on October 26 at 7 p.m.
The curtain-raiser is Gloria!, a 2024 Italy–Switzerland co-production and the first feature from Italian director Margherita Vicario. It unfolds in an 18th-century girls' school in Venice, where a young musician starts pushing back against the conventions of her era.
Bookending the festival is a homegrown triumph: Pepe, directed by Dominican filmmaker Nelson Carlos de los Santos Arias, a 2024 production spanning the Dominican Republic, Germany, France and Namibia. The director took home the Silver Bear for Best Director at the 2024 Berlin International Film Festival, so the closing night carries genuine awards pedigree.
In between, the programme runs to 14 films drawn from an unusually wide spread of countries — Italy, France, Germany, Spain, Sweden, Romania, Ireland, Hungary, Greece, Finland and the Netherlands among them. The curation leans toward diverse voices, international co-productions and filmmakers whose work rarely reaches Dominican multiplexes, which is precisely the point: the EU and local cultural partners frame EUROCINE as a bridge for cultural exchange and a way to widen access to international cinema that locals wouldn't otherwise see on a big screen.
For visitors, it's a rare chance to catch festival-calibre European titles in the Caribbean capital — many of these films won't have wide distribution anywhere in the region, let alone elsewhere. Screenings pair naturally with Santo Domingo's Colonial Zone evenings, where you can walk from the cinema to dinner in one of the oldest European-built city centres in the Americas.
The full schedule and ticketing details will be published on the EU Delegation's social channels, @unioneuropeard, so check there before locking in dates. Screening times, venues and admission prices haven't all been announced, but with the opening fixed for October 26, there's time to build a few film nights into a Dominican Republic itinerary.
For travellers already eyeing the Dominican Republic this autumn, EUROCINE adds a low-cost, indoor-friendly cultural evening to a trip usually built around beaches and resorts. And for film fans specifically, it's one of the few opportunities to see this selection of European titles on the big screen anywhere in the Caribbean. Details and the complete programme come via the EU Delegation Dominican Republic, as reported by Dominican Today.
