A fast-moving dock fire has written off one of Alaska's newest cruise facilities. The Glacier Getaway Terminal in Whittier, the $80 million pier opened only in late 2024, has been declared a total loss by Alaska's State Fire Marshal's Office, according to Anchorage Daily News.
The blaze broke out around 11 a.m. on a Monday and took crews more than 13 hours to fully put out, with the last flames extinguished near 12:30 a.m. the following morning. Nobody was hurt, the U.S. Coast Guard confirmed, though a high-speed catamaran was damaged and port operations were disrupted. The Norwegian Jade, in port that day, sailed away unscathed.
The 500-foot dock is part of a bigger complex — a new terminal building and a two-berth pier — built with private money by Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings in partnership with Huna Totem Corporation, the Alaska Native village corporation for Hoonah. The idea was to give NCLH's three brands — Norwegian Cruise Line, Oceania Cruises and Regent Seven Seas Cruises — a purpose-built turn-port in Southcentral Alaska, letting ships start and end itineraries close to the glaciers rather than funnelling everything through Seattle or Vancouver.
Huna Totem says it is still working out the full extent of the damage and can't yet say what happens next. Repairs, reopening timelines and future operations all hang on that assessment, so anyone with an Alaska cruise booked through Whittier is in wait-and-see territory.
Interestingly, two calls remain on the calendar: the Norwegian Jade and Seven Seas Explorer are still scheduled to dock in late September and early October, with both ships pencilled in for multiple visits in 2027. Whether those plans hold depends on how the damage review shakes out.
