Fine dining gets plenty of attention in Dubai, but the city's real happy place might be the beer garden: a cold drink, an open-air terrace and a big screen showing the football. A new round-up highlights 14 of the best spots for a post-work pint or a lazy weekend afternoon.
The classic move is a golf-club patio. Crafty Fox at the Jumeirah Golf Estates clubhouse pours until 11.30pm daily, with a menu running from caviar nuggets to full Sunday roasts. Spike Sports Bar & Terrace at the Emirates Golf Club has one of the best-value happy hours in town, 5pm to 8pm daily, with spirits from Dhs35, plus sunset views over the course. The Duck Hook at Dubai Hills Golf Club is the pick if roast dinners are the priority, alongside hand-pulled beer at the bar.
For something with a bit of heritage, The Irish Village in Al Garhoud is one of the city's longest-standing favourites, serving slow-braised short ribs and pub pies. McCafferty's in JVC actually holds a Guinness World Record as the world's largest Irish bar, and it runs a generous daily happy hour from 12pm to 8pm. McGettigan's in JLT remains a Dubai staple, layering brunches, live music, comedy and quiz nights on top of a happy hour running Sunday to Friday.
German and British themes are well covered too. Ernst Biergarten at the 25hours hotel brings Bavarian draught beers, house-baked pretzels and live sport to a leafy wooden-bench garden that comes into its own in the cooler months. Reform Social & Grill at The Lakes does fairy lights, shaded trees and proper roast dinners. The Underground at the Habtoor Grand on JBR plays on its London Underground theme with British pub grub and an all-day happy hour.
A few quirks worth knowing: Logs & Embers on Palm Jumeirah is an American smokehouse with sand rather than grass, live sport and a pet-friendly policy, so dogs are welcome. UBK at the Mövenpick JLT mimics a vineyard, is fully air-conditioned, welcomes pets and starts drinks at Dhs35 during one of the area's longest happy hours. Horse & Hound at the Al Habtoor Polo Resort trades skyline views for faux grass, fairy lights and the occasional horse wandering past, with a weekday happy hour from 4pm to 7pm. In Downtown, Distillery Gastropub pairs live DJs with a 3pm to 8pm happy hour, while Garden On 8 in Media City is the after-work haunt of choice with two-for-one drinks from 4pm to 8pm.
Why it matters: beer gardens are one of the easiest ways to enjoy Dubai's outdoor season, roughly October to April, without a resort bill. Happy hours are common and genuinely cheap, most venues welcome walk-ins, and several are pet-friendly, which is still rare in the city. If you're visiting, pick a garden near where you're staying, arrive before sunset, and check the sport or live music schedule first.
