A lane off Bathurst Street is about to smell like cookies and sound like a DJ set. Honest Ed's Alley, the pocket of micro-shops and food vendors built on the site of the old Honest Ed's department store, is hosting Pumpkin Alley, a free fall celebration where anyone can pick up a complimentary pumpkin while supplies last.

The event runs from 3 to 6 p.m. on Wednesday, October 28, with the alley found just off Lennox Street, between Markham and Bathurst. Alongside the pumpkin giveaway, expect free samples from Mirvish Village neighbours including SOBR Market, Batch Cookies and Soleya Teas, plus a live DJ to keep things moving. Organizers frame it as a nod to Honest Ed's long-standing tradition of generosity and community spirit — fitting, given the store's famous history of giveaways and loss-leader bargains.

The alley itself is worth the trip even without a gourd in hand. It only recently took shape as part of the Mirvish Village redevelopment. In July it was still a work in progress, with one of the original neon signs from Ed's Alley already reinstalled roughly where it used to hang. The plan is for more restored glowing signs to light up the micro-retail units, so the space is gradually turning into a little homage to the store that once anchored the block.

If you're in Toronto that week, the timing works out nicely. The giveaway is completely free, it's an early-evening event so you can swing by after work, and the surrounding Mirvish Village strip has enough cafes and indie shops to fill an hour or two. Just get there on the earlier side — pumpkins go until they run out, and a free-pumpkin event in a popular neighbourhood will draw a queue.

It's a low-stakes excuse to explore one of the city's newer small-scale spaces, snap a photo under a restored neon sign, and head home with everything you need for a windowsill jack-o'-lantern.
