Johannesburg's tap water is slowly coming back after a disruption that started on 19 October left some households without running water for more than ten days. City Mayor Dada Morero told reporters on Monday 2 November that overall water storage had climbed to 41%, up from 37% the day before — a small but welcome sign that the network is recovering.
The picture across the city is patchy, though. Some reservoirs are doing well: Crown Gardens Reservoir and Tower are back at full capacity, Yeoville Reservoir has pushed above 40%, and supply has improved in parts of Brixton, Crosby and Hursthill. Elsewhere, recovery is lagging. Parktown Reservoir sits at a low level, Grand Central Reservoir in Midrand remains critically depleted with pumping to its tower suspended, and parts of Sandton, Midrand, Randburg and Roodepoort are still dealing with low pressure and interruptions.
The mayor says water is being restored gradually on purpose — pushing too much through too fast could strain a system that's still fragile. Technical crews are meanwhile tackling leaks, burst pipes and pressure problems that could trip up the recovery. Until things stabilise, residents are being asked to keep water use to a minimum.
For locals, the crisis has meant reorganising daily life around where to find water, with cooking, cleaning and bathing all becoming logistically difficult. For travellers, the practical takeaway is simpler: Johannesburg's northern and north-western suburbs — the areas where most hotels, guesthouses and the main airport rail links sit — have been among the worst affected. If you're heading to Joburg in the near term, it's worth checking with your accommodation that they have water and backup storage sorted before you book. Many upmarket hotels carry water tanks and boreholes precisely for situations like this, but smaller guesthouses and self-catering spots may not.
The improving reservoir numbers suggest the city is past the worst, but full, reliable supply is the real test. Until then, pack patience and a refillable bottle if Joburg is on your itinerary.
