The Maldives has had a strong run on the international awards circuit, with four resorts picking up recognition in recent months — and the winners say something interesting about where the country's hotel scene is heading.

Finolhu, part of the Seaside Collection, was named Best Design Resort in the Maldives at the Global Destination Awards run by World Fashion Channel, announced at a ceremony in Moscow. The resort sits inside the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve of Baa Atoll and was designed by London studio Muza Lab, which swapped the usual understated Maldivian luxury look for bold colours, expressive patterns and playful detailing across its 125 villas, restaurants and bars. Its two-kilometre sandbank and the barefoot Crab Shack are among its signature spots, and the resort positions itself as an "Island Playground" with a rolling programme of art, food, wellness and sport, plus visiting artists in residence.

Also in Baa Atoll, the much smaller .Here Baa Atoll won two categories at the AHEAD Asia 2026 awards — Landscaping & Outdoor Spaces and Suite — chosen from a record field of over 220 entries. It is an intentionally intimate retreat: just nine large private residences spread across two islands named Somewhere and Nowhere. Architect Christopher Chua of Kulör Group and interior designer Inge Moore of Muza Lab built the whole project around the idea that buildings should follow the islands rather than dominate them — muted tones, natural materials, passive cooling and residences angled for sunrise and sunset. The wins send it through to the AHEAD Global round.

Over in the family camp, Kandima Maldives took the Family Activities & Entertainment title at the UK's Family Traveller Awards 2026, decided by public vote after a journalist-shortlisted field of hundreds. General Manager Dermot Birchall credited the resort's push against the Maldives' honeymoon-only image: purpose-built family infrastructure, accessible pricing and attractions like Fast Track, the country's longest and fastest go-karting circuit, plus PlaySpace, a hub of gaming, escape rooms and VR. A Running Club, foraging and farm tours and a planned Adventure Park keep the multi-generational angle growing.

And Siyam World, part of Sun Siyam Resorts' Lifestyle Collection, has now been named Most Innovative Resort at the TTM Awards three years running. The island has 16 villa categories, 24-hour premium all-inclusive dining, the largest floating water park in the Maldives, the country's only horse ranch, a Jetcar, an electric go-kart track and overwater villas with slides.
