Blackpool gets the crowds, but less than an hour up the Irish Sea coast sits Morecambe, a former Victorian resort that offers a quieter, cheaper take on the English seaside day out.
The town began as three separate fishing villages that merged in the mid-1800s and became a favourite escape for working-class northerners. What remains is a long seafront promenade lined with Victorian buildings, a huge bay that empties into miles of sand at low tide, and — on clear days — views across to the hills of the southern Lake District.
The centrepiece is the Stone Jetty, a broad pier jutting into Morecambe Bay. Walk to the end for Trafalgar Point and the view, and keep an eye out for the hopscotch grids and maze built into the paving. On the jetty itself, the Stone Jetty Cafe occupies the old railway station and serves bacon sandwiches, hot dogs and scones with a nautical theme and outdoor seating.
Back in town, two shops stand out. Beach Bird is a boho-leaning gift shop selling jewellery, notebooks, vintage trinkets and even running a magic shop out back. The Old Pier Bookshop is a second-hand browser's dream, floor-to-ceiling shelves packed with old volumes and wooden figurines wedged into every gap.
Food is more interesting than the resort-town stereotype suggests. The Royal Bar & Shaker, in an elegant pastel building, does fish and chips, jacket potatoes and a Sunday roast, with live music at weekends and hotel rooms upstairs. Grow Kitchen is a well-rated cafe with strong vegetarian and brunch options — think chicken flatbread or bacon hash browns with cranberry sauce, plus matcha and iced tea.
For culture, the Winter Gardens dates to the 1870s, when it ran as an entertainment hall complete with restaurants and public plunge pools. It now hosts concerts and festivals. Overnight options include the classic Midland Hotel and the Strathmore, so a day trip can easily stretch into a weekend.
Why bother? It's a genuinely low-effort escape. Trains from London take a little over three hours, and Blackpool locals can be there in under an hour by car. If you want more, Garstang, a walkable medieval market town, is about 30 minutes away, while Fleetwood offers seafood and beaches and Preston brings city boutiques and a music scene. For anyone doing the usual London-plus-day-trip England itinerary, Morecambe is a strong alternative to the Blackpool circus.
