The Old Village Historic District pairs antebellum homes and Spanish moss with small shops, while the Charles Pinckney National Historic Site preserves a Founding Father's cottage and Patriots Point Naval and Maritime Museum lets you board WWII-era ships. One of the most meaningful ways to engage with the area's past is through Gullah Geechee culture, sustained by descendants of enslaved people from Central and West Africa. Boone Hall Plantation and Gardens hosts Gullah performers sharing stories and presentations, and the annual Sweetgrass Festival showcases artisans weaving the region's signature coiled baskets — a craft tradition still very much alive.
For travellers, the appeal is practical: you get beaches, paddling, wildlife, serious food and layered history in one walkable-feeling town, with Charleston's attractions a short drive or water taxi away. Come for a weekend and you'll likely find yourself tacking on extra days.
