Calgary has a fresh reason to browse: Mountain Goat Books, a new independent bookstore with a mountain-lodge feel, has opened its doors in the northwest community of Greenwich. The shop sits just steps from Calgary Farmers' Market West, which makes an easy combined outing — pick up local produce, then wander next door for a new novel.
The store is the project of Calgary couple David Katz and Myka Estes, who had talked about opening a bookshop together for years. The nudge that turned talk into action came during a visit to Four Point Books in Invermere, BC, where a chat with the owners convinced them to take the leap themselves.
The design and vibe borrow from the Rockies: think the snug rooms of a mountain lodge rather than a sterile big-box store. The founders wanted a space where locals could meet fellow readers and stumble onto new titles, and the shelves cover all ages and tastes. Beyond books, there are journals, cards and gifts — handy if you're ticking off a holiday shopping list for the reader in your life.
Mountain Goat Books opened officially on Sunday, Oct. 11, and trades seven days a week: 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Mondays and Tuesdays, 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday, and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sundays. You'll find it at 120 – 55 Greenbriar Dr. NW, and browsing costs nothing.
Why should a traveller care? If you're passing through Calgary — especially en route to Banff or Kananaskis — this is a fitting stop for a city that styles itself a gateway to the Rockies. A mountain-themed bookstore near a farmers' market is exactly the kind of low-effort, high-charm detour that breaks up a driving day. It also adds to a small local bookshop scene worth exploring if you have a slow morning in the city; there are several other independents around town to pair it with.
Timing-wise, autumn suits the shop's whole premise: shorter days, cooler air, and an excuse to curl up with something new. And if you're in Greenwich on a weekend, the farmers' market next door gives the visit a bit more substance — breakfast, produce and a paperback in one short walk.
