Ask most travellers about outdoor Canada and the same images come up: Rockies, glaciers, turquoise lakes. A recent piece from Explore Magazine makes a different case — that the Prairies, Canada's big sky country spanning Alberta's eastern plains, Saskatchewan and Manitoba, are among the country's most underrated places to get outside.

The argument is easy to buy once you know what's actually out there. Grasslands National Park in southern Saskatchewan protects one of the last intact pieces of mixed-grass prairie in North America — rolling coulees, badland edges, standing teepee rings and a dark-sky preserve where the stars put on a better show than in most of the country. Bison roam the West Block, and black-footed ferrets and prairie dogs have been reintroduced in a rare conservation success story.

Farther north, the prairie experience shifts. Manitoba offers something no plain province can: polar bears and beluga whales around Churchill, plus the northern lights over Lake Winnipeg in winter. Saskatchewan's boreal fringe — Prince Albert National Park among them — mixes canoe routes and beaches into what most people wrongly assume is flat farmland all the way through. Even the flatness is a feature: huge horizons, century-old grain elevators, and hiking and cycling trails like the Spirit Sands dunes in Spruce Woods Provincial Park, actual desert dunes in the middle of Manitoba.

There's a practical case too. The Prairies are cheaper than Banff in every category, you rarely fight crowds for a viewpoint, and the road-trip format works brilliantly here — long drives between genuinely distinct towns, from artsy Moose Jaw and its tunnels to Winnipeg's revamped Exchange District.

Why it matters: if your image of a Canadian outdoor holiday is queued-up shuttle buses and six-month advance bookings, the Prairies flip that. They reward travellers who like space, wildlife and weird, subtle scenery over postcard peaks. Go with realistic expectations — this is a place about big skies and small details, not summit shots — and it delivers.
